Tamiya Mini 4WD Weekly Report

Tamiya Mini 4WD Weekly Report

The Tamiya Mini 4WD craze has taken hold of some of the office crew, namely Gary, Craig and Tony. We've been hitting up our local Mini 4WD track, Dukwho Workshop, for the past couple months to pit our building skills against the regulars that attend the Thursday night racing events.

While Tony and Craig have some mad skills at RC, they're total noobs when it comes to these little cars. However, with the help of our seasoned veteran, Gary (and countless hours on YouTube), we've been slowly learning more and getting faster. Craig already has 4 wins - 2 in Box Stock, 1 in Animal Racer GT (specialty race) and one in the High-Speed No-Cut (tire) class (another specialty class). Tony has 2 wins - 1 in Basic and 1 in Box Stock. Gary, on the other hand, has something like 1800 wins in a variety of classes, thus the reason he's our go-to team leader!

For those un-initiated, there are 4 standard classes offered on a regular 'club' race night:

1) Box Stock: This class is a build-it-as-it-comes class, meaning only the parts that come in the box are what you can use. No upgrades, no modifications, no changes - just you and your building skills.

2) Basic: The Basic class is a basically a Box Stock car with some upgrades - different motors and FRP mount plates for adding plastic rollers and weights. Bodies can be mixed and matched as can tires and wheels, allowing for some customization. Because of the upgraded motors and tuning parts, these cars can be considerably faster than the Box Stock rides.

3) BMax: BMax allows the same upgrades as Basic, but also lets you start dabbling in bearings and carbon parts. There is a motor limit with the BMax cars, however the use of bearings (in both the axles and rollers) compensates for this, giving the BMax cars a little more speed than the Basic class.

4) Tuned: This class is insane! Tuned cars take a BMax setup and allow for 'floppy' bodies to help plant the cars when they land, giving them an added advantage over the BMax. While similar in speed, a Tuned car is almost always faster than the BMax - which is already pretty ridiculous.

There are two more classes - Advanced and Open - however these are specialty classes and not normally offered on club race nights.

Ok, so, now that you have some general knowledge, we'll be keeping everyone posted (hopefully on a weekly basis) on our progress. We typically run on a 3-lane track but will be racing on a 5-lane track on Thursday the 25th of April 24, 2024, as well as Dukwhos’ monthly Grand Prix on the 27th.

If you're in the area, stop by and say hi! It really is fun (and addictive), and we'd love to chat Mini 4WD with you!
