2005 Tamiya Worlds

2005 Tamiya Worlds

This year our trip winners went through a quick and regimented schedule. The first three days were spent racing and the following days were spent site seeing. The racing venue was held at the Twin Messe Convention Center were a temporary carpet track was constructed just for this event. During this time the Tamiya Fair also took place. The Tamiya Fair is a big event in which the public is treated to a public showing of all the products that Tamiya manufactures with a couple of sneak previews of what is to come in the future. Designers and artisans are also on hand to answer the public’s questions and inquiries.

Each year 3 lucky and deserving TCS racers win a trip to Japan to compete in the Tamiya World Championships held in Shizuoka Japan. They earn this trip by winning the TCS North American Finals title in a respective class. In 2005 the three winners were Corey Lewis (GT-1), John Houda (GT-2) and Edgar Fiallos (F-1). These three racers made their trek to Japan on November 16th were they were greeted by senior Tamiya Japan staff. Fourty plus winners since 1995 have made this annual trip to see how they will fair against the worlds best. In the history of TCS National Championship Series, national championship representatives have only been successful twice in bringing back a world title. Those World Champions are Robert Itoh (GT-1) and Raymond Flores (Mini) representing the United States.

Our drivers this year did their best. Edgar Fiallos and Corey Lewis both made the “A” main in the GT-1 class and John Houda made it into the “B” main in the Gt-2 class. Unlike the asphalt racing that our three trip winners are accustomed to, the carpet surface at the Tamiya World’s proved to be most challenging. Unlike asphalt, carpet racing has its own set of set up rules. Our winners tried every trick in the book and report that they have learned a lot about what to do on a carpet track. While no World title was brought home in 2005 our trip winners report that they had a fun time racing on the carpet track prepared special for this world event.

Racing was not all that our winners go to enjoy. On the fifth day of their trip they were treated to a tour of the Tamiya factory facilities. Along with other TCS series winners from all over the world, our dignitaries were bused around the city to visit local hobby shops for their buying pleasure. On the last day of their trip all foreign drivers from around the world were taken on a tour of Tokyo. There too they were treated to shops and fine dining. Ask any of the winners and they are sure to tell you that the trip goes by incredibly fast.

It’s hard to believe, but Tamiya America has been sending winners since 1995 and the 2006 season is only a few months away. Our winners brought back pictures of their experience to share with everyone. As we look forward to 2006 our winners would like to share with all present and future participants of the TCS series that the effort it took to win a National title to get them to Japan was well worth it. They will be back in 06 to take on former national winners at the now traditional “Grudge Match” at the TCS North American Finals
