4th Annual KO PROPO GP

4th Annual KO PROPO GP

The KO PROPO Grand Prix has concluded and three new champions have been crowned. Well, sort of, as both David Jun and Corey Lewis have successfully defended their 2005 titles by fending off some of Southern California’s best R/C drivers. We do, however, have a new KO PROPO Grand Prix Mini class champion. John Christensen, a local TCS favorite successfully beat the competition with his Tamiya M04. Congratulations to John and his masterful drive in this new class for the KO GP.

In the spec class the rules changed a bit for 06. Those rules included a power plant change. In 05 the spec class used 19 turn motors, but for 06 the spec motors changed to the popular 23 turn formula which is favored in Asian markets. The other power plant change involved the legality of the new and ever evolving LIPO battery pack. Lipo batteries weigh considerably less than standard Nickel Metal or NiCd batteries, but a minimum weight rule was enforced to balance out the disparity. Overall, the Lipo battery proved to be on par with the current trend of batteries, but with the added bonus of not having to buy or lug around an army of battery packs to go race. Yours truly as well as four others in the A main were able to run the whole event on one battery pack. That alone was worth the price of admission.

Corey Lewis having proved to be the man to watch in spec classes throughout the years was able to beat the best that the KO field had to offer. Corey drove his newly built TRF 415 MSX MRE to victory lane in the first two “A” main events. Rumor has it that Corey will try his hand at modified next year as he quote “David who”???? thinks he can show him a thing or two. Congratulations to Corey for a masterful drive. Congratulations also go to Charlie Albrecht for giving Corey a run for his money in the first “A” main.

David Jun was not so lucky. He dragged out the Modified Triple “A” mains to the final one. David having secured the TQ position easily won the first “A” main race, but Josh Numan was able to show him the better racing line in “A” main #2 and took this family squabble to the final main event. After some much close racing and some questionable maneuvers it was David Jun that came out on top of Numan. This year David used LRP’s and Reedy’s new Brushless system to power his TRF 415MSX MRE. David was heard saying that he has never had so much power. Like the Lipo batteries mentioned earlier it is clear that electric racing is on the forefront of changing and brushless systems are definitely a product that will bring that change as well as Lipo batteries.

John Christensen having recently finished competing at the recent TCS North American Finals had something to prove to himself. John pretty much was the class act of the field because he was able to secure the overall championship by winning the first two of three “A” main races. Congratulations to John and we hope to see him make the rounds at next years TCS finals.

Congratulations to all the winners and participants of the 4th Annual KO PROPO Grand Prix. We hope everyone had fun and we hope to see everyone again next year.
