Yan Chai Hospital R/C Model Grandprix Charity Race

Yan Chai Hospital R/C Model Grandprix Charity Race
The Yan Chai Hospital, in conjunction with the Hong Kong Model Racing Club held a fund raising charity event in the form of an International Touring Car Grandprix. The location of the event was in the courtyard of the Plaza Hollywood Shopping Mall which is a popular modern mega mall in Kowloon, Hong Kong. With the event being held on November, 22nd & 23rd, the weather was perfect which made for a large spectator turnout.
About the hospital:
For over 40 years, Yan Chai Hospital keeps on offering social services to the public. Today, our hospital has developed to a Clarity Foundation that offers medical services, social welfare services, educational services and emergency assistance to the public. Again, we have set up a foundation fund to support those patients suffered from paralysis.
About the Model Car Club:
Established in 1991, Hong Kong Model Racing Club (TRC) is formed by a group of fans who love to enjoy the fun of radio-controlled car. Our goal is to introduce this sport to the others. Later on, with the support from the local District Council, our activities became one of the recreational activities being held in our district. In year 2007 we have revised our club logo as well as our short title to TWSF. We became a member of "The Federation of Tsuen Wan District Sports and Recreation Association Ltd". We are sure that this will enable this sport to become more popular in our district and, at the same time, in other districts as well. We will continue to convince the HKSAR government to build an international standard racing track for this sport so that it will continue to develop healthy.
The Event:
The MC for this special event was the famous radio control car organizer/announcer Scotty Ernst from Trackside Hobbies in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Mr. Ernst is arguably the best race announcer in the business and came directly from the IFMAR World Championships in Thailand to announce this event. It was great to have him in Hong Kong not only for the excitement he brings to all his events but also because there was a tight schedule to maintain. Practice and qualifying were on Saturday, a final round of qualifying and the triple A-Finals on Sunday. With only two days covering the entire event and only two rounds of practice, it was vital to have a well balanced car. Drivers from the United States, Europe and Asia were in attendance to challenge for the title and after four rounds of qualifying, Tamiya America's David Jun qualified in second position in the A-finals driving the TRF416 chassis.
In the first A-final, the battle began early between David Jun and Josh Cyrul. Both quickly broke away from the field and fought among themselves for the win. Traffic worked for and against both drivers during the course of the race and ultimately, a last lap pass by David secured the victory in A-1. Things were a little more difficult for David in A-2 with a mistake early in the race sending him to the back of the field. However, David quickly began working his way back to the front and with-in the half way point was up to second position and closing quickly on the leader Josh Cyrul. With only a one second gap now separating the two, a rare mistake from Josh allowed David to take the lead and eventual victory in A-2 securing the overall championship title.
In addition to the racing, several Hong Kong celebrities made an appearance during the intermission to do their part in supporting the charitable event. This included local beauty pageant winner Ms. Hong Kong, a famous Hong Kong actress and singer Suki Chui and a live performance from Eric Suen, a popular Hong Kong singer. After the live performance, all the celebrities gave R/C cars a try with vehicles including the Tamiya 4WD Durga buggy. This event drew thousands of spectators and shined a positive light on the R/C hobby and generated significant donations to the hospital. Special thanks to the Hong Kong Model Racing Club for an amazing job organizing and setting up the event, Scotty Ernst for generating the excitement and the Yan Chai Hospital for inviting David to compete resulting in another Touring Car Championship for Tamiya!
