  1. Description

Like many other sports car manufacturers, the Alpine was founded by a sports car enthusiast. His name is Jean Redele. Inheriting his father"s Renault car dealership, he started racing with the Renault 4CV.
However, he shortly learned the limitations of the heavy body, and thought of improving it by replacing the original body with his own body design made of FRP. This "4CV Special" won its class in the Mille Miglia, a renowned Italian road race, in 1955. Since then, Alpine had received ovations in tuning Renault cars. Based on the Renault 8, the Alpine A110 was released in 1963. It had a Gordini tuned 956cc 4 cylinder engine at the rear and lightweight body shell made of FRP. The front suspension was the independent double wishbone type while the rear used swing arms. Having numerous changes throughout its existence, production of the A110 continued til 1997. Among those variants, the 1600SC was most sophisticated. The engine was replaced by a 1,602cc 4 cylinder OHV unit with a Weber carburetor, yielding 140 horsepower. The rear suspension was altered from a swing arm type to a double wishbone type, earning even better road holding.
The A110 proved its potential by dominating road races held in the late 60"s and early 70"s. Among them, the pinnacle of its career was undoubtedly in 1971 when it entered the 1971 Monte Carlo and eventually became world champion for the season. With its many successes, the Alpine A110 is still an object of envy among the motorsports enthusiasts worldwide.
